§ 53.107 LAYING OF SEWER PIPE.
   (A)   In addition to the other specifications in §§ 53.105 et seq., all P.V.C. sewer lines shall be installed in accordance with A.S.T.M. D-2321 “Recommended Practice for Underground Installation of Flexible Themoplastic Sewer Pipe” and in accordance with the pipe manufacturer’s recommendations. All clay sewer pipe shall be installed in accordance with A.S.T.M. C-12 “Recommended Practice for Installing Clay Sewer Pipes” and with the following specifications.
   (B)   Gravity sewer mains shall be laid with batter boards and string line or with an approved laser beam to ensure proper grades and alignment. Prior to placing the sewer pipe, the trench bottom shall be carefully hand-graded to provide uniform support along the barrel and bell holes shall be excavated to accommodate the pipe bell. The pipe shall be joined in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. After joining, the pipe shall be bedded and backfill material placed to the pipe centerline and hand- or machine-tamped to provide a firm uniform bedding for the pipe. Additional backfill material shall then be placed to provide at least 4 inches of suitable cover over the pipeline before any material is placed with machinery. Force mains shall be laid with a minimum cover of 3 feet.
   (C)   All pipe shall at all times be handled, stored, and installed in a manner that will prevent the intrusion of dirt, muck, or other foreign substances into the line. Prior to joining, each section of pipe shall be inspected and any dirt or objects shall be removed from the inside of the line.
   (D)   The contractor shall keep all trenches dry during the installation of the sewer lines. Dewatering will be accomplished when the ground water level is above the flowline grade of the new installation. All open pipe ends shall be tightly plugged when work is not in progress and water shall not be permitted to run through any length of pipe already laid. Should mud, dirt, trash, and the like, be permitted to enter the pipe during installation, the contractor shall flush or scrape the pipe thoroughly to ensure complete removal of all foreign objects prior to connection to the existing system.
   (E)   Concrete encasement or cast-iron pipe shall be provided at locations where spacing from water mains is less than permitted by the State Environmental Improvement Agency or where additional protection of the sewer lines is desirable.
