(A) Numbers required. All houses and buildings on any street, lane, alley or avenue or fronting any public ground, of the village, shall be numbered in accordance with the street numbering plats of the village, as the same shall be made and prepared by the Village Engineer.

(B) Plan of numbering. All streets running in an easterly and westerly direction shall be numbered eastwardly and westwardly, beginning at Sandusky Street, north of the Public Square and at Plymouth Street, south of the Public Square. All streets running in a northerly and southerly direction shall be numbered northwardly and southwardly, beginning at Main Street, west of the Public Square, and at Trux Street, east of the Public Square. When going away from public square, even numbers should be on the right side and odd numbers on the left side of the street. The first number shall be ten.

(C) Allotment of numbers. There shall be a separate number for each store room or residence on Sandusky Street, from the Public Square north to the corporation line; on Plymouth Street, from the Public Square south to Greenlawn Cemetery; on West Main Street, from the Public Square west to the corporation line; and on all sides of the Public Square. In all other parts of the village, the residences shall be numbered consecutively, allowing a number for each vacant lot of sufficient size to place a dwelling thereon.

(D) Assignment of numbers to lots; certificates. When the Village Engineer has prepared a numbering plat in accordance with this chapter, the Village Fiscal Officer shall assign the proper numbers to every parcel of land in the village fronting on any of the public grounds and ways and shall issue a certificate upon the request of any property owner, agent, lessee or occupant, certifying the proper street number so assigned to such lot or parcel of land.

(E) Size, type and location of numbers. The numbers used on all houses and buildings shall be not less than two inches by three inches in size for each digit, or on plates not less than three inches by six inches in size, and the numbers so placed shall be distinct and legible and shall be placed in a conspicuous place immediately above the main entrance to every house or business room and in full view of the street or thoroughfare. However, nothing in this section shall prevent any person from numbering his or her own house or building in any distinct, legible and ornamental manner.

(F) Second floor numbers. In all cases where there is an occupied room upstairs, there may be a one-half number assigned to such room.

(G) Assignment of numbers to new lots and buildings. The Village Fiscal Officer shall, from time to time as new lots are formed and new buildings erected, see that proper house numbers are assigned to such new lots and that proper numbers are placed on such new buildings.

(H) Defacing or substituting numbers. No person shall, in any manner, interfere with, take down, alter or deface any number on any house or building, or put up or retain a number in an improper manner, or substitute any number on his or her house or building for the number assigned thereto as specified herein.
