§ 150.19  CHIMNEYS.
The walls of all chimneys, whether the fuel used is wood, coal, gas or oil, shall be built of brick, concrete, stone or hollow tile, according to the following specifications:
   (A)   Brick Chimneys.  Brick chimneys shall be built of solid brick or may be built of perforated radial brick, manufactured and adapted to withstand high temperatures, but no other hollow brick shall be used. The walls of brick chimneys shall be not less than 3¾ inches thick. All brickwork shall be laid in spread mortar with all joints push filled. Exposed joints, both inside and outside, shall be struck smooth. No plaster lining is permitted.
   (B)   Concrete Chimneys. Concrete chimneys cast in place shall be suitably reinforced both vertically and horizontally. The walls shall be not less than 3¾ inches thick.
   (C)   Concrete Blocks. Concrete blocks used in chimney construction shall have walls not less than  3¾ inches thick. Blocks enclosing more than one flue shall have suitable reinforcement completely encircling the blocks and well embedded in them. All joints shall be struck smooth.
   (D)   Rubble Stone Chimneys. Rubble stone chimneys shall be not less than 12 inches thick with all joints struck smooth.
   (E)   Hollow Building Tile.
      (1)   Hollow building tile shall not be used for walls of isolated or independent chimneys, but may be used for chimneys built in connection with exterior tile walls not exceeding two stories in height, in which case the chimney walls shall be not less than eight inches thick. The outer eight inches of the building wall may serve as the side wall of the chimney, but the remaining chimney walls shall be constructed of two layers of four-inch tile set with broken joints or may be built of four inches of solid brick work. In either case, the walls or the chimney shall be securely built into the wall of the building. No chimney shall be corbelled from a hollow tiled wall.
      (2)   Chimneys shall be built at least three feet above the flat roofs and two feet above the ridge of peaked roofs and shall be properly capped with terra cotta, concrete, cast iron or other approved substance or material, but no cap or coping shall decrease the required flue area.
      (3)   Chimneys shall not rest upon or be carried by wooden floors, beams or brackets or be hung from wooden rafters. Iron brackets or stirrups attached to wooden construction shall not be used to support chimneys. In frame buildings, chimneys shall always be built from the ground up or rest on the basement floor.
      (4)   Chimneys shall be built upon masonry or concrete foundations properly proportioned to carry the weight imposed without danger of settling or cracking. The foundation of an exterior chimney shall start below the frost line.
