(A) Members of the Police Department and special police assigned to traffic duty hereby are authorized to direct, control and regulate all traffic in accordance with the provisions of this chapter, or in emergencies as public safety or convenience may require. All persons shall comply with any lawful order, signal or direction of a police officer. Except in case of emergency, it shall be unlawful for any person not authorized by law to direct or attempt to direct traffic.
(B) The Fire Department officer in command, or any firefighter designated by that officer, may exercise the powers and authority of a police officer in directing traffic at the scene of any fire, or where the Fire Department has responded to an emergency call, for so long as the department’s equipment is at the scene.
(C) In case a police officer is on duty directing traffic at any place where a stop is required to be made under the provisions of this chapter, the drivers of all vehicles shall obey the directions of the officer with respect to the movement of traffic.
(D) All police officers of the city, the County Sheriff and Sheriff’s Deputies and all Illinois State Highway Police officers, hereby are authorized to direct all traffic in accordance with the provisions of this chapter, or in emergencies as public safety or convenience may require.
(1) It shall be unlawful for any person to fail or refuse to comply with any lawful order, signal or direction of any such officer.
(2) Except in case of an emergency, it shall be unlawful for any person, other than the officers mentioned in this division, or other persons authorized by this chapter, to direct or attempt to direct traffic.
