(A) The village shall have an auxiliary police force of no more than ten auxiliary police officers.
(B) The Chief of Police will select the auxiliary police officers after a consideration of the eligibility requirements listed below. To apply for the position of auxiliary police officer, the applicant must:
(1) Be at least 21 years of age;
(2) Have at least a high school education or its equivalent;
(3) Complete a village application form;
(4) Be subjected to a background check;
(5) Be approved by the Police Committee and the Village Board; and
(6) Have successfully completed or agree to successfully complete a Department-approved 250 hour auxiliary police officer training program in the use of weapons and other police procedures. The cost of tuition and books for applicants, who are enrolled in the training by the Department, will be paid by the village, subject to reimbursement as provided in a Reimbursement Agreement to be executed by the applicant and the village prior to the applicant’s appointment as an auxiliary police officer.
(C) Before appointment, all auxiliary police officers shall have their fingerprints taken.
(D) Auxiliary police officers shall be subject to a post-offer physical examination.
(E) All auxiliary police officers will be under the direct supervision and control of the Chief of Police and his or her staff of certified Village of Peotone Police Officers in the performance of all of his or her duties. Auxiliary police officers will be assigned any of the following duties:
(1) To aid or direct traffic within the village;
(2) To aid in the control of natural or man made disasters;
(3) To aid in case of civil disorder;
(4) To perform normal and regular police duties as directed by the Chief of Police, when it is impractical for members of the regular Police Department to perform those normal and regular police duties; and
(5) To exercise all other powers as conservators of the peace that the corporate authorities may prescribe.
(F) The village will purchase one uniform for each auxiliary police officer. The village will give each auxiliary police officer $75 annually to maintain his or her uniforms and equipment. If the auxiliary police office ceases working for the village, he or she will immediately return all uniforms, badges and other Department property to the Chief of Police. Identification symbols worn by auxiliary police officers shall be different and distinct from those used by members of the regular police department and shall be selected by the Chief of Police.
(G) Auxiliary police officers will not receive any economic compensation for their assistance to the village. However, auxiliary police officers will receive special event pay, provided that such service is performed at the direction of the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police will determine the amount of special event pay.
(H) Auxiliary police officers are authorized to carry firearms in accordance with the policy and procedure manual of the Village Police Department. An auxiliary police officer will only carry a firearm while in uniform, in the performance of his or her duties and with the permission of the Chief of Police.
(I) Auxiliary police officers must comply with the policy and procedure manual of the Village Police Department, in the same manner as all other officers of the Police Department.
(J) Auxiliary police officers must volunteer for a minimum of eight hours per month. Auxiliary police officers must attend all department and association meetings as required. Failure to attend such meetings will result in discipline in the same manner provided by the policy and procedure manual of the Police Department.
(K) An auxiliary police officer's service is at the will of the village and of the auxiliary police officer. As such, the auxiliary police officer's service may be terminated by either the auxiliary police officer or the village, for any reason or no reason.
