(A) The work consists of the application of a bituminous tack coat on a previously prepared base or on an existing pavement surface in accordance with these specifications.
(B) In general, a tack coat will not be required on primed bases except in areas that have become excessively dirty and cannot be cleaned, or in areas where the prime has cured to the extent that it has lost all bonding effect. Generally, a tack coat will be required on hot bituminous base courses before placing the surface course.
(C) The tack coat shall be applied with a pressure distributor except that, on small jobs, if approved by the Engineer, application may be by other mechanical devises or by hand methods. The bituminous material shall be heated to a suitable temperature and shall be applied in a thin, uniform layer.
(D) The rate of application shall be between 0.02 and 0.08 gallon per square yard. For tack coat applied on concrete pavement, which is to be surfaced, the rate of application may exceed the upper limit, if directed by the engineer.
(E) The tack coat shall be applied sufficiently in advance of the laying of the bituminous mix to permit drying but shall not be applied so far in advance that it might lose its adhesiveness as a result as a result of being covered with dust or other foreign material. The tack coat surface shall be kept free from traffic until the subsequent layer of bituminous hot mix has been laid.
