(a) Application of Section. The provisions of this section, except those applying to structural safety, do not apply to folding awnings on dwellings, unless such awnings project over a public thoroughfare.
(b) Locations and Projection.
(1) No part of the framework of a folding awning projecting over a public thoroughfare shall be less than seven feet, six inches, and no part of the canvas shall be less than six feet, eight inches, above the grade of the thoroughfare under the awning when only pedestrian traffic is a consideration for clearance, nor less than fourteen feet above the grade when vehicular traffic is a consideration for clearance.
(2) The awning, when less than fourteen feet above the grade, shall be erected not nearer than eighteen inches to the vertical plane passing through the nearest curb line.
(c) Construction.
(1) Folding awnings hereafter erected shall be constructed of noncombustible materials or of approved flame-resistant fabric.
Folding awnings shall be designed, constructed and erected so that the covering, when of canvas or fabric, will withstand a wind pressure, acting in any direction, of not less than ten pounds per square foot of exposed surface of the awning and so that the supporting frame and anchorage will safely withstand a wind pressure, acting in any direction, of not less than twenty pounds per square foot of exposed surface of the awning. When other types of covering, such as plastic, metal, etc., are used, the design shall be the same as required in Section 1484.03(d).
(2) The framework of a folding awning shall be of noncombustible material.
