1484.03 FIXED AWNINGS.
   (a)   Application of Section. The provisions of this section, except those applying to structural safety, do not apply to fixed awnings on dwellings, unless such awnings project over a public thoroughfare.
   (b)   Location.
      (1)   No part of a fixed awning projecting over a public thoroughfare shall be less than seven feet, six inches above the existing or finished grade of the street or sidewalk under the awning when only pedestrian traffic is a consideration for clearance, nor less than fourteen feet above the grade when vehicular traffic is a consideration for clearance.
      (2)   No part of a fixed awning shall extend more than twenty feet above the existing or finished grade under the awning when the awning projects beyond the wall of the building upon which it is placed.
      (3)   No part of a fixed awning shall be placed in the space included between the horizontal plane two inches below the elevation at one-half the height of a wall opening for a window and the horizontal plane passing through the bottom of the wall opening.
      (4)   No fixed awning shall be located so as to unduly interfere with the operations of the Division of Fire, which, in this respect, shall be subject to the control of the Fire Chief, who may order the same to be removed.
   (c)   Projection. The projection of fixed awnings shall be limited as follows:
      (1)   No part of a fixed awning less than fourteen feet above the grade of a public thoroughfare under the awning shall extend closer than eighteen inches to the vertical plane passing through the nearest curb line.
“Curb line”, as used in this subsection, means the side of the curbing nearest the centerline of the thoroughfare.
      (2)   Except as may be further restricted in paragraph (c)(1) hereof, no part of a fixed awning shall extend beyond the wall or face of the building to which it is attached more than six feet for a one-story building, nor more than five feet, three inches, for a building more than one story high.
   (d)   Construction.
      (1)   Fixed awnings hereafter erected or which project over a public thoroughfare shall be constructed of noncombustible materials when they project beyond the wall of the building or of plastics which meet the requirements of the Ohio Building Code. Otherwise, the covering of such awning may be of flame-resistant fabric.
      (2)   Glass or other fragile or hazardous material shall not be used in any part of a fixed awning.
      (3)   Only corrosion or mildew-resisting materials, or materials adequately protected against corrosion or mildew, shall be used in the construction of fixed awnings.
      (4)   Fixed awnings shall be designed, constructed, erected and anchored to withstand safely, without exceeding the allowable unit stresses for the materials used, a live load of not less than twenty pounds per square foot of horizontal projection of the awning and, in addition thereto, the wind pressure and uplift specified in the Ohio Building Code and this Building and Housing Code.
   (e)   Drainage. When the design or location of a fixed awning is such that the drainage from it creates or will create a nuisance or a hazard to the public, such awning shall be equipped with gutters, spouting and drains adequate to eliminate such nuisance or hazard.
