1484.04 GROUND-SUPPORTED AWNINGS.
   (a)   Application of Section. A ground-supported awning shall comply with the applicable provisions of the Zoning Code, especially those which apply to porches, and with the provisions of this Building and Housing Code, except that the provisions of this Building and Housing Code, other than those applying to structural safety, do not apply to ground-supported awnings accessory to a dwelling only.
   (b)   Location. Ground-supported awnings shall not be erected nearer to a lot line than three feet, nor nearer to a street line than the building line established by the Zoning Code.
   (c)   Construction.
      (1)   Ground-supported awnings shall be designed, constructed and erected so that the covering, when of canvas or fabric, will withstand a wind pressure, acting inwardly only and acting outwardly only, of not less than ten pounds per square foot of the covering exposed to the wind at any time, and so that the supporting work and anchorage will withstand a wind pressure, acting on the covering in the same manner as above, of not less than twenty pounds per square foot. For types of covering other than canvas or fabric, the design shall be the same as required in Section 1484.03(d).
      (2)   The covering for ground-supported awnings shall be of approved flame- resistant canvas or of any fabric equally fire resistant.
      (3)   Ground-supported awnings shall be fully open on not less than one side facing a street when used for the conducting of business and occupancy by the public.
   (d)   When Prohibited.
      (1)   Ground-supported awnings, when covered with canvas or fabric, shall not be erected nor remain erected during the season subject to sleet or snow, except by special permission from and under conditions for safety set forth by the Superintendent of Building and Zoning Inspection.
      (2)   Ground-supported awnings shall not be used for hazardous occupancies nor in a manner or for a purpose deemed hazardous by the Fire Chief.
   (e)   Authorization. A ground-supported awning shall not be erected until a building permit has been obtained from the Superintendent.
