(a) Except as required for electric signs in Section 1454.40 and for glass box signs in subsection (e) hereof, wall signs which exceed forty square feet in area shall be constructed of noncombustible materials or metal-clad wood or shall be metal face signs. Moldings and cappings may, in any case, be of wood or other suitable and equally slow-burning materials.
(b) Except as required for glass box signs in subsection (e) hereof, wall signs over 300 square feet in area shall be erected in unattached, independently supported sections of not more than 300 square feet each in area.
(c) Wall signs shall be securely attached to the building by means of metal anchors, bolts or expansion screws. Wall signs shall not be attached by nails, screws, hooks or staples to wooden blocks, wooden pegs or nailing strips built into or driven into masonry, except that such signs may be attached to masonry walls with square shank sign hooks in wooden plugs driven into sound masonry when the hooks are designed for the purpose and such attachment is adequate. Round shank hooks shall not be used in wood plugs.
(d) The metal used for metal clad wood signs, which are constructed of wood entirely clad or encased in metal, shall be not less than No. 28 B & S gauge.
(e) Sections of a glass box sign erected as a wall sign shall not exceed forty square feet in area of one face, and each section shall be independently supported and self-releasing from every other section. Such signs shall comply with the provisions of Section 1454.39 and other applicable provisions of this Building and Housing Code.
