Roofs shall be designed and constructed to withstand the dead load which they support and the applicable live and wind loads specified in this section without exceeding the allowable stresses specified in the Ohio Building Code or this Building and Housing Code.
(a) The uniformly distributed design live load for roofs is as follows:
(1) Forty pounds per square foot for roofs with a pitch of less than three and one- half vertically to twelve horizontally.
(2) Thirty pounds per square foot for roofs with a pitch of between three and one- half and seven, inclusive, vertically to twelve horizontally.
(3) Twenty-five pounds per square foot for roofs with a pitch of between seven and twelve, inclusive, vertically to twelve horizontally.
(4) Only wind and dead loads shall comprise the required design load for roofs with a pitch of twelve or more vertically to twelve horizontally.
(b) Roofs shall be designed and constructed to withstand the wind load specified in Section 1444.03, and, in addition thereto, the design live and dead loads where the roof has a pitch of seven or more vertically to twelve horizontally. The wind pressure shall be considered as applied to each slope of a pitched roof, but from one direction at a time.
(c) Every roof, hereafter erected, except as provided in this section, having a rise of more than twelve inches per foot of horizontal projection, shall be designed to carry safely a wind force acting normal to the roof surface, on one slope at a time, of not less than that specified in Section 1444.03, and no vertical live load need be assumed.
(d) Every roof hereafter erected for theaters, assembly halls and school buildings shall be designed to safely carry a vertical live load of not less than forty pounds per square foot of horizontal projection.
(e) When a roof, in addition to serving as a closure of a building or structure, is to be used as a floor, it shall be designed to safely carry the live load to be imposed, but not less than the minimum live load for floors, consistent with such use, as is prescribed in the Ohio Building Code or this Building and Housing Code.
(f) The roofs of all buildings or other structures shall be designed and constructed to withstand pressures, acting outward normal to the surface, equal to one and one-quarter times those specified in Section 1444.03 for the corresponding height of the roof above the ground. The height to be taken shall be the mean height of the roof structure above the average level of the ground adjacent to the building or other structure, and the pressure shall be assumed on the entire roof area.
(g) Roofs or sections of roofs with slopes greater than thirty degrees shall be designed and constructed to withstand pressures, acting inward normal to the surface, equal to those specified in Section 1444.03 for the height above the ground at which the roof is located, and need to be applied to the windward slope only.
(h) Overhanging eaves and cornices shall be designed and constructed to withstand outward pressures equal to twice those specified in Section 1444.03 for the height above the ground at which such appendages are located.
(i) Adequate anchorage of the roof to walls and columns, and of walls and columns to foundations, to resist overturning, uplift and sliding, shall be provided in all cases.
