§ 35.01 FIRE CHIEF AND ASSISTANT CHIEF; EMPLOYMENT, QUALIFICATIONS OF FIRE FIGHTERS.
   (A)   The head of the Fire Department shall be the Fire Chief who shall be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Council and who shall continue in office until removed for the causes and under the powers and procedure provided for the removal of officers by R.C. §§ 733.35 through 733.39. Council may provide for the employment of such firemen as it deems best and fix their compensation, or for the services of volunteer firefighters and such firefighters shall be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Council, and after satisfactorily serving a six-month period shall continue in office until removed for the causes and under the powers and procedure provided for the removal of officers by R.C. §§ 733.35 through 733.39.

   (B)   The Assistant Chief shall, in the absence or disability of the Chief, perform all the functions and exercise all of the authority of the Chief.

   (C)   New recruits shall be not less than 18 nor more than 55 years of age and able-bodied. They shall pass a satisfactory mental and physical examination and shall become members of the Fire Department only after a six-month probationary period.
