When stop signs are erected, as provided in § 70.43 at or near the entrance to any intersection, every driver of a vehicle approaching the same shall stop such vehicle at such sign or at a clearly marked stop line before entering the intersection, except when directed to proceed by a police officer or traffic-control signal, and shall yield the right-of-way to other vehicles which have entered the intersection from the intersecting street or which are approaching so closely on such intersecting street as to constitute an immediate hazard, but such driver having so yielded may proceed and the drivers of all other vehicles approaching the intersection on such intersecting street shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle so proceeding into or across the intersecting street.
