(a) When activated, all smoke detectors shall provide an audible alarm in the dwelling unit.
(b) Smoke detectors with a. c. or d. c. power supply are permitted. A. c. power supplied units must also be backed up by a secondary d. c. power source in order that they may be operational in the event of a power failure. Units powered only by a. c. are not acceptable for any residential occupancies. Where a. c. /d. c. combination units are used, all a. c. power lines shall be wired directly to the main power supply of the building. All d. c. powered detectors shall have built-in protection to prewarn of battery failure.
