1373.03 TYPES OF HYDRANTS AND FITTINGS, ETC.
   (a)   All hydrants shall conform to Fire Division standards and shall be supplied by a main of not less than eight inches. For average conditions, hydrants should be placed fifty feet from the buildings protected. Where it is impossible to place them at this distance, they may be put nearer, provided that they are set in locations where the chance of injury by falling walls is small, and from which persons are not likely to be driven by smoke or heat.
   (b)   Not smaller than eight-inch pipe shall be installed underground in yard systems for mains or hydrant branches. There shall be a branch line shut-off valve for each hydrant. Underground valves requiring a key shall be located so that sections of the main can be isolated. One or more connections from a public water system shall be acceptable. The capacity of the supply shall meet the needed fire flow as determined by the authority having jurisdiction. A looped system may not be required if the yard hydrants are installed on an eight-inch main not exceeding 600 feet in developed length. Structures having high life hazard due to processes contained therein or adjacent thereto and/or a large occupancy load, and those which may be subject to potential water flow problems, may require a looped system to provide increased fire flow without excessive friction loss. The looped connections to the public water system shall be as remote from each other as practical (NFPA 24, 2-2.1).
