Each parking meter erected shall be so set as to display a signal showing legal parking upon the deposit of a five-cent coin, ten-cent coin or twenty-five cent coin of the United States therein for a period of time to be designated upon the meter. Each such parking meter shall by its device clearly set out and continue in operation such signal from the time of depositing one of such coins until the expiration of the period designated on such meter, and, at the expiration of such time, shall indicate by a proper signal that the lawful parking period has expired.
