Street name signs shall be constructed and erected in conformity with the following specifications.
(A) (1) Wood signs shall be of appropriate lengths cut from one-inch by four-inch stock; No. 2 common or better grade or durable specie.
(2) Background paint shall consist of at least two coats of lead-in-oil “outside white” paint as recommended by the manufacturer. Letters and numerals shall be of a durable flat black paint as recommended by the manufacturer, tops of all letters and numerals to be aligned and lettered in the following manner:
(a) Named streets: name in three-inch Gothic letters: “Street”, “Avenue” and the like; abbreviations in two-inch Gothic letters; and
(b) Numbered streets: three-inch numerals and Gothic letters, except two-inch Gothic letters for endings “th”, “nd” and the like.
(B) Metal signs shall be of heavy gauge bonderized steel. Background and letter painting to be as recommended by the manufacturer, with size of sign and letters in general agreement with dimensions specified in division (A) above.
(C) Placing and setting signs shall be as follows.
(1) Each street name board shall be affixed to post by means of two three-sixteenths-inch by two and one-half-inch lag screws with washers; heads of lag screws and washers to be painted white after being inserted.
(2) Mounting of metal signs shall in general conform with specifications for wood signs. Metal sign mountings as recommended by the manufacturer may be acceptable as alternates.
(3) (a) Wood posts shall be set at least three feet six inches in the ground. Suitable backfill material shall be placed in the hole around the post in successive layers not to exceed 12 inches in depth measured loose. Each layer of backfill shall be thoroughly tamped to secure the maximum density so that the post shall be plumb and rigid.
(b) The post, above the creosote line, shall be given two coats of lead-in-oil “outside white” paint as recommended by the manufacturer.
(c) Backfilled portion of posts shall be creosoted in conformation with A.S.T.M. standards for such installations.
(4) Metal posts installed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations may be acceptable as alternates to wood posts.
(D) Posts shall not be installed in frozen or thawing ground unless the posts are imbedded in cement concrete from the bottom of the post hole to one foot below the ground line.
