Upon notification by the Building Commissioner of the proper number of a building, the owner of such building shall cause such number to be placed and continuously maintained in a conspicuous place on the front of such building. If a building stands back more than 45 feet from the street line, the number shall be conspicuously displayed at or near the walk, driveway, or common entrance to such building at the street line on a gate post, fence, tree post, or other appropriate place so as to be easily legible from the sidewalk.
