(a) A limited area sprinkler system of an approved type shall be installed in storage and workshop areas in all portions of use group "A" (Assembly), "B" (Business), "I" (Institutional), "M" (Mercantile) or "Rl" and "R2" (Residential hotels and multifamily) occupied for storage, workshop, scrub room or similar purposes.
(b) In all storage areas where a domestic water supply is used to supply the automatic sprinkler system and where more than four sprinkler heads are installed, a water flow valve along with an audible/visual device shall be installed per the specifications of the Fire Prevention Officer or Fire Chief. Where more than 20 or more sprinkler heads are supplied, by either a domestic water supply line or a fire line, the system shall be monitored by a central monitoring station.
(c) In reference to division (a) of this section, a variance may be granted by the Fire Prevention Officer or Fire Chief, to install a monitored automatic fire detection system throughout the building, in lieu of a sprinkler system. Division (b) of this section shall apply if an outside horn/strobe unit or is installed where 19 or less sprinkler heads are required, or where monitoring by a central monitoring station is required where 20 or more sprinkler head are installed.
