As used in this chapter:
(a) "Active service" means being present for the performance of the duties to which an employee of the City has been assigned. "Active service" includes authorized leave with pay.
(b) "Appointment" means the induction of an employee, by due authority, into a position of employment with the City.
(c) "Calendar month" means the period beginning from the first day to and including the last day of any one of the twelve calendar months.
(d) "Calendar week" means the seven consecutive calendar days beginning at 12:01 a.m. Sunday through and including 12:00 midnight Saturday.
(e) "Class" means a position, or groups of positions, having similar duties and responsibilities and requiring similar qualifications which can be properly designated by the same descriptive title.
(f) "Compensatory time" means time off with pay on a scheduled workday for authorized overtime previously worked.
(g) "Continuous service" means service which is not interrupted by resignation, retirement or discharge. Periods of layoff, leave of absence without pay or other no-pay status shall be deducted when computing continuous service for benefit eligibility purposes.
(h) "Duty day" means the number of hours of work normally performed in a day by an employee in his or her specific job assignment.
(i) "Floating holiday" means a work day off with pay, of the employee's choice, subject to prior approval of designated superior authority.
(j) "Full-time employment" means active service in a position, designated as such by either an ordinance or a collective bargaining agreement, which service is to be performed on a regularly scheduled basis, a minimum of thirty-seven and one-half hours per calendar week, unless otherwise provided in an existing and current collective bargaining agreement.
(k) "Immediate family" means a spouse, son, daughter, brother, sister, parent, grandparent, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, stepfather, step-mother, step-sister, step-brother, step-son, step-daughter, half-brother and half-sister.
(l) "Overtime" means time during which an employee is on duty in excess of regularly scheduled work hours.
(m) "Paid status" means all time during which work is performed for compensation received. "Paid status" also includes authorized leave with pay.
(n) "Pay plan" means a schedule of compensation rates established for the various positions in the City service.
(o) "Pay rate" means the hourly and/or annual compensation for services performed by City employees.
(p) "Resignation" means the voluntary termination of employment by a City employee.
(q) "Severance pay" means any prorated, unused vacation, compensatory time, eligible sick leave or remuneration due upon resignation or retirement of an eligible active employee.
(r) "Sworn member" means a uniformed employee of the Police or Fire Division.
(s) "Task system" means a work schedule providing for completion of a given work assignment as fulfillment of a regularly scheduled work day.
(t) "Three platoon system" means a work schedule providing for a twenty four hour duty day followed by a forty-eight hour off-duty period.
(u) "Weekend" means the first and second day of unscheduled work in a work week.
(v) "Work day" means an eight-hour shift, except as otherwise provided, during which an employee is scheduled for active service.
