(a) No person shall sell, offer for sale, barter, buy, give away, use or possess a nonbarbiturate sedative hypnotic drug or substance in any form. This section shall not apply to any person, or his employee or agent, authorized by an agency of the State or Federal government to use nonbarbiturate sedative hypnotic drugs or substances for controlled research purposes while engaged in such authorized and controlled research. As used in this section, “nonbarbiturate sedative hypnotic drugs or substances” includes methaqualone, MAOA, MTQ, Dormigoa, Dormutil, Dorsedin, Holodorm, Omnyl, hyminal, motolon, hypcol, hyptor cateudyl, ipnofil, melsedin, melsomin, mollinox, sopor, citexal, nebedorm, normi-nox, parminal, noctilene, optinoxan, ortonal, quaalude, renoval, somnium, RIC 272, rorer 148, rouqualone, sindesvel, sonal, soverin, somberol, somnoned, toquilone, toraflon, torinal, tuazolone, tuazole, and strasenburgh, including salts, derivatives or any compound containing any of the foregoing.

(b) Whoever violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree.
