7-5-23: DEFINITIONS:
For the purposes of this title, certain terms or words used herein are hereby defined and the following definitions shall be used in the interpretation of the provisions of this title. Words used in the present tense shall include the future tense; the singular number shall include the plural, the plural the singular; the word "person" shall include a firm, association, organization, partnership, trust, company or corporation; the words "used or occupied" include the words "intended, designed or arranged to be used or occupied"; the word "shall" or "will" is mandatory; and the word "may" is permissive. Any other words used and not defined herein shall be construed as having the commonly accepted meaning as defined in a standard dictionary.
AIR GAP: Prevents backflow by physically disconnecting the water supply and any source of contamination.
BACKFLOW PREVENTER: Device used to prevent water from within a structure or temporary connection to flow backward through the meter into the public water supply main; protects the system from contamination.
BUFFALO BOX: A vertical sleeve which provides access to a buried roundway. Also called a "shutoff box".
CORPORATION COCK OR STOP: A device which includes a valve, one end of which is screwed into the tapping sleeve and to the opposite end is attached the water service line for an individual property.
CROSS CONNECTION: A connection between two (2) otherwise separate piping systems, one containing potable water and the other water or another liquid which may be contaminated.
CURB COCK OR STOP: See definition of Roundway.
ISOLATION VALVES: Two (2) valves installed on either side of a device such as the water meter or cross connection devices, to allow the water service to be shut off while the device in the middle is installed, tested, or repaired.
PERSON: Any and all persons, natural or artificial including any individual, firm, company, municipal, or private corporation, association, society, institution, enterprise, governmental agency or other entity.
POTABLE WATER: Water which is free of objectionable contamination or minerals, and is considered suitable for human consumption.
ROUNDWAY: A valve located outside between the water main and the structure, usually near the property line, used to start or stop flow to the building. The valve is operated by means of a long key which is inserted through the buffalo box to the roundway.
SADDLE: A split fitting designed to fit over an existing water main to allow a connection to be made under a tapping machine, while the main is under pressure. The device is usually made of bronze or stainless steel, and serves to secure the corporation stop to the main.

TAP ON: Connection of a service line to a water main.
TEST COCK: A small cock, faucet, or valve set in a water pipe, pump, backflow device or water jacket used to drain water, test pressure, or to chlorinate the main. (Ord. 2004-3840, 6-7-2004)
