Any person convicted of a misdemeanor or a violation of any section of this code wherein a specific penalty is not imposed, shall be fined in a sum not exceeding five hundred dollars ($500.00) for one offense, or confined in the municipal or county jail not more than six (6) months, or both such fine and imprisonment, recoverable with costs, and in default of payment of any fine imposed shall be imprisoned in the municipal or county jail for a period of one day for each ten dollars ($10.00) of such fine. Whenever a defendant is sentenced to imprisonment or is imprisoned for nonpayment of a fine or costs, he may be put to work for the benefit of the municipality for the term of his imprisonment.
