(A) General nature of work. An employee in this position normally performs his duties on the grounds of the city, although at times the position may require off site work in order to ensure the proper operation of the city's infrastructure or to provide services to other units of government. An employee in this position may also perform minor administrative tasks, such as providing information on equipment and parts used on a particular job so that the city may properly bill for the work. Duties are performed under the guidance of a working foreman, a leadman, or a management superintendent, and under the overall supervision of the Department Head.
(B) Special Nature of Work.
(1) In this position, an employee will frequently come into contact with citizens who must be considered customers of the city. Citizens are frequently concerned only with how city services are being provided to them at a particular instant. Employees must recognize the citizen's concerns, and ensure that each citizen is treated in a courteous manner. Maintaining a courteous and respectful demeanor towards the city's customers does not mean that an employee is expected to accept abusive language or behavior from any one. Should abuse occur, the employee should report the situation to his supervisor as soon as practical.
(2) city services must be maintained outside of normal working hours, and this employee will be required to work overtime hours on occasion. An inability of the employee to work overtime, or an unwillingness to do so in an emergency situation, will make the employee ineligible for this position.
(3) This position will require an employee that has an ability to routinely lift 50-pound objects from ground to chest level, and also requires the ability to quickly enter and exit equipment cabs.
(C) Examples of Duties. Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class.
(1) Operates equipment assigned to the division or department which may include, but is in no way limited to, such items as end-loaders, backhoes, graders, trucks, mowers, street sweepers, tractors, and sewer cleaning machines.
(2) Perform routine maintenance on all the equipment used in the division or department and notify the appropriate person of any problems that need attention. Responsible to ensure that equipment to be used is in safe, operational condition prior to leaving the garage, and is cleaned, fueled and operational when stored each day.
(3) Perform the daily work of the department which may include street and alley maintenance, repairs, and improvements; storm sewer and sanitary sewer maintenance, repairs, and improvements; tree and brush pruning, removal, and pickup; traffic control devices maintenance, repairs, and improvements; snow removal; and other general maintenance actions on city infrastructure.
(4) Ensure that assigned work orders issued by the foreman/leadman, Operations Manager, or his designee are completed in a timely manner, and results are communicated back concerning the same.
(5) Inform the foreman/leadman, Operations Manager, or his designee if, in his opinion, routine work cannot be attended to as new work orders may exceed the individual or crews ability to conduct the same. Examples of routine work are work orders issued by foreman/leadman, Operations Manager, or his designee; seasonal work of snow removal, street & alley patching, inlet cleaning; or brush pickup, traffic control device maintenance, and household maintenance of facilities and equipment.
(6) As necessary and as assigned, perform the daily work of the division which involves equipment operation and infrastructure maintenance, both preventative and as occurring.
(7) Assist in maintaining an inventory of parts and supplies adequate to the conduct of preventative and emergency maintenance and repairs by communicating such needs to the leadman/foreman, Operations Manager or his designee before a supply shortages occurs.
(8) As directed ensure Street Division spaces and grounds are kept in good condition.
(9) Performs related duties as directed by the leadman/foreman, Operations Manager or his designee.
