Police officers and school crossing guards shall, whenever conditions require it, direct traffic in accordance with the provisions of this Traffic Code. Police officers are hereby authorized, in the event of fire or other emergency or in the safeguarding or expediting of traffic, to direct traffic otherwise than as specifically provided in this Traffic Code. The direction of traffic may be by word or audible signal, by gesture or visible signal, or by any combination thereof.
