"Area of building" means the total area, taken on a horizontal plane at the largest floor level, and measured to the outside face of the outside walls, of the main building, exclusive of uncovered porches, terraces, steps, or awnings, marquees, and nonpermanent canopies and planters, and attached or unattached garages.
