(A) Classification: Full-time hourly or part-time hourly.
(B) Characteristics of the class. This is general duty police a work in enforcing laws and ordinances. Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property; for the prevention, direction, and investigation of crimes; and for maintaining law and order. Work involves an element of personal danger and generally is performed in uniform. Specific assignments are received from a superior and are carried out in accordance with established rules and procedures; however, employees must be able to act without direct supervision in meeting emergencies. Work is reviewed through reports, inspection, and observation of results obtained.
(C) Example of duties.
(1) Patrols a designated area of the city in a patrol car to prevent and discover the commission of crime and to enforce traffic regulation; answers calls and complaints; administers first aid; serves warrants; and answers questions for the public.
(2) Conducts preliminary investigations at the scenes of crimes and serious accidents; gathers evidence; locates and interviews witnesses; makes arrests and interrogates prisoners; compiles accident statistics.
(3) Directs traffic at intersections and at accidents and fires; maintains order in crowds, at parades, and other public meetings.
(4) Operates electronic equipment for speed detection.
(5) Processes prisoners, provides for their needs and supervises their activities; appears in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of crimes.
(6) Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.
(7) Participates in training activities.
(8) Gives advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the public.
(9) Performs related work as required.
(D) Training and experience as required by state statute: Completion of a standard high school course; age 21.
(E) Special knowledge, skills and abilities:
(1) Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action.
(2) Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
