The police department shall consist of a public safety director, chief of police, a deputy chief and such number of police officers as the mayor and board of trustees shall, from time to time, deem appropriate. The public safety director shall be appointed, discharged and/or removed by the mayor and board of trustees. The chief of police shall be appointed, discharged and/or removed in the manner set forth in section 2-11-8 of this code. The deputy chief shall be appointed, discharged and/or removed in the manner set forth in section 2-11-9 of this code. Any police officer, other than the public safety director, chief of police or deputy chief, may be dismissed, discharged or suspended in accordance with division 2.1 of article 10 of the Illinois municipal code and the rules and regulations promulgated thereunder by the board of police commissioners.
