2-11-8: CHIEF OF POLICE; APPOINTMENT; REMOVAL:
Pursuant to the authority contained in 65 Illinois Compiled Statutes 5/10-2.1-4 and 5/3.1-30-5, the village mayor, with the advice and consent of the corporate authorities, shall appoint the chief of police. The chief of police may be removed or discharged by the village mayor. In such case, the village mayor shall file with the corporate authorities the reason for such removal or discharge, which removal or discharge shall not become effective unless confirmed by a majority vote of the corporate authorities. The terms of employment of the chief of police may also be governed by an agreement between the chief of police and the village. (Ord. 980-02, 4-15-2002; amd. Ord. 1125-05, 5-16-2005)
If a member of the Hawthorn Woods police department is appointed chief of police prior to being eligible to retire on pension, he shall be considered as on furlough from the rank he held immediately prior to his appointment as chief. If he resigns as chief or is discharged as chief prior to obtaining eligibility to retire on pension, he shall revert to and be established in such prior rank and thereafter be entitled to all the benefits and emoluments of such prior rank without regard as to whether a vacancy then exists in such rank.
