Any person violating the provisions of this chapter shall upon conviction thereof, before a court of competent jurisdiction, be punished by a fine of not more than $25 together with the costs of prosecution and in default of the payment of such fine and costs shall be imprisoned in the county jail or the city jail for a period not exceeding 30 days, or by both such fine and imprisonment in the discretion of the court.
