It shall be the duty of the Chief of the Fire Department to require the person in charge of every building, factory, store, hotel, theater, tenement and the like except private residences, in the city in which gas is used for illuminating, heating or other purposes to equip the building with an automatic gas safety valve, cock or appliance, by means of which, in case of fire, accident or other necessity, the supply of gas may be shut off from the building without requiring firefighters or other persons to enter the building for that purpose.
