(A) If an employee wishes to take time off due to the death of an immediate family member, the employee should notify his or her supervisor immediately. A maximum of five work days with pay for all city employees will be allowed for a death in the immediate family, and such days shall be used in conjunction with the date of death or funeral visitation. Immediate family includes: spouse, natural father, natural mother, child, and stepchild.
(B) A maximum of three days with pay for all city employees will be allowed for the death of current stepfather, current stepmother, brother, current stepbrother, sister, current stepsister, current mother-in-law or father-in-law, grandchildren, grandparents, and in-laws with a dependency relationship with the employee; such day shall be used in conjunction with the date of death or funeral visitation. At the discretion of the department head, absence for other funerals will be considered as vacation leave or personal leave or granted without pay.
(C) Bereavement leave pay will be calculated based on the employee’s straight time pay rate (as of the date of the bereavement leave) times the number of hours the employee would otherwise have worked on that day. (For example: seven hours, eight hours, ten hours, twelve hours) For example, an employee in the Clerk-Treasurer’s office would be granted seven hours of pay for the bereavement leave; an employee in the Street Department would be granted eight hours of pay.
