Streets and other public ways shall generally retain their historical and familiar designations. New streets and other public ways shall be named so that they are distinct, as written and pronounced, from the name of any other street and other public way within the village, the fire district, and the postal areas serving the village. The village board, on its own motion or on a petition of a majority of the residents living on a given street or other public way, may change the name of any street or other public way within the corporate limits of the village.
