As used in this chapter, unless it appears from the context that a different meaning is intended:
(a) "Street" means any street, alley, avenue, court, lane or public place in the City.
(b) "Taxicab" means any motor vehicle engaged in the business of carrying persons for hire, whether the same is operated from a street stand or from a garage, where no regular specified route is traveled, but where passengers are taken to and from such places as they may designate, excluding automobiles used exclusively as hearses, funeral cars, ambulances, hotel buses, sight-seeing buses and motor buses.
