For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates of requires a different meaning.
HISTORIC DISTRICT. A discrete, geographically definable area containing buildings, structures, sites, lands and areas linked historically through their location, design, workmanship, setting or association with people or events which have made an important contribution to the heritage of the Fort Madison area.
HISTORIC LANDMARK. Any building, structure, site or object which has been placed on the City Historic Landmarks Register, pursuant to § 2-9-6 of this chapter.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION. The Fort Madison Historic Preservation Commission, as established by this chapter.
HISTORIC PROPERTY. Any building, structure, site, area or object which has been identified and evaluated as significant because of its historical, architectural, archaeological or aesthetic value, including, but not limited to, old houses, commercial buildings, barns, outbuildings, archaeological sites, cemeteries, landscapes and streets.
SIGNIFICANCE. The sense of time and place in history that is conveyed by historic properties, their educational and scientific value and their capacity for enhancing the visual and aesthetic character, diversity and interest of the city.
