290.05 PROBATION; ADVANCEMENTS WITHIN A PAY RANGE.
   (a)   After initial appointment or promotion to a position covered by this chapter, the first six months of service in the position to which an employee is appointed or promoted shall be considered the period of probation, except for uniform police and fire personnel, who shall serve a one-year probationary period. In the event the employee does not satisfactorily complete his or her probationary period, he or she shall be separated from the service, except that, in the case of promotion from a lower position, he or she shall revert to such lower position with the rate of pay to which he or she would have been entitled had he or she continued to serve in such lower position without promotion.
   (b)   An employee whose entrance is at the minimum of the base range shall be advanced one step in the appropriate range effective following the successful completion of the probationary period. Subsequently, all employees shall be advanced to the higher rates based upon length of service. Such advancement shall be made according to the lengths of service specified in the salary schedule until the employee has reached the maximum base rate of the class grade for his or her position. An employee shall receive his or her longevity raise effective on the employee's anniversary date.
