§ 93.116  REQUIRED WATER SUPPLY FOR FIRE PROTECTION.
   (A)   All Class 1 structures or portions of Class 1 structures hereafter constructed shall be provided with a water supply capable of providing the required fire flow, for fire-fighting purposes for a minimum period of two hours. The water supply shall be from a source as set forth in § 903.2 of 675 IAC 22.
   (B)   In setting the requirements for fire flow, the Fire and/or the Prevention Chief shall use Appendix B as a guide. Notwithstanding the provisions of this division, a reduction in required fire flow of 75% is allowed when the building is provided with an approved automatic sprinkler system. The resulting fire flow shall not be less than 1,000 GPM at 20 PSI residual.
   (C)   An owner or occupant who seeks a variance from an order issued under this section may file a variance with the Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission as set forth in I.C. 36-8-17.
   (D)   Water supply for firefighting, minimum requirements are as follows:
      (1)   Four inch.  Used only for wall hydrants and must be connected to sprinkler system main supply;
      (2)   Six inch.  Used only when looped. In high hazardous applications loop must be fed from two locations;
      (3)   Eight inch.  May be dead ended based on occupancy and fire load, with pre- construction site inspection;
      (4)   Ten inch.  May be dead ended; or
      (5)   Twelve inch.  May be dead ended.
   (E)   Distance between sprinkler connection and supply hydrant no more than 25 feet, unless authorized by the Frankfort Fire Department Chief and with the following standards:
      (1)   Hydrants.  No more than 500 feet apart, hydrant will be color coded for flow, in accordance with NFPA 291 (see table below).

      (2)   Hydrant threads.  Open clockwise or right, close counter clockwise or left National Fire Thread.
      (3)   Sprinkler connection.  Will be remote from building unless otherwise authorized by the Fire Department Chief and the installation will be subject to approval and inspection by the authority having jurisdiction.  The sprinkler hook up will be Stortz one-quarter turn connection, four inches in diameter,  with the following conditions:
         (a)   Must be accessible and unobstructed;
         (b)   Connection shall be three to five inches above finish grade level (see figure below).
         (c)   Shall be turned downward at a 45 degree angle (see figure below).
