1-5-7: SICK LEAVE; BEREAVEMENT LEAVE:
   (A)   For purposes of this section, the term "sick leave" shall mean an employee's personal illness requiring confinement at home or in the hospital. The term "employee" means any person drawing a full time salary from the village and does not include an elected official of the village. (Ord. 91-13, 8-27-1991)
   (B)   All employees other than firefighters shall be entitled to ninety six (96) hours of sick leave for each calendar year (the equivalent of twelve 8-hour days). After January 1, 2000, those employees will be allotted eighty (80) hours of sick leave days for each calendar year (the equivalent of ten 8-hour days). Firefighters shall be entitled to one hundred forty four (144) hours of sick leave for each calendar year (the equivalent of eighteen 8-hour days). After January 1, 2000, firefighters shall be allotted one hundred twenty (120) hours of sick leave for each calendar year (the equivalent of fifteen 8-hour days). Corporate authorities or department heads may require a physician's certificate as a basis for pay during leave after an absence of three (3) consecutive days in the case of employees except firefighters, or two (2) consecutive shift days in the case of firefighters. The accumulation rate shall be prorated at eight (8) hours per month (the equivalent of one 8-hour day) for all employees other than firefighters. After January 1, 2000, for those employees (other than firefighters), the accumulation rate shall be one 8-hour sick day for each of the first ten (10) months of the calendar year and none for the remaining two (2) months. Firefighters shall accumulate sick leave at twelve (12) hours per month (the equivalent of 1.5 8-hour days). After January 1, 2000, firefighters shall accumulate sick leave at ten (10) hours per month throughout the calendar year. (Ord. 98-14, 11-10-1998)
   (C)   Sick time may be used in increments of at least one-half (1/2) day for all employees except firefighters, and eight (8) hours in the case of firefighters. (Ord. 91-2, 2-12-1991, eff. retroactive to 1-1-1991; amd. Ord. 96-1, 1-9-1996)
   (D)   Employees (other than firefighters) may accumulate up to a maximum of four hundred eighty (480) hours of unused sick leave (the equivalent of sixty 8-hour days). After January 1, 2000, employees (other than firefighters), may accumulate up to a maximum of eight hundred (800) hours of sick leave (the equivalent of one hundred 8-hour days). Firefighters may accumulate up to a maximum of six hundred seventy two (672) hours of unused sick leave (the equivalent of eighty four 8-hour days). After January 1, 2000, firefighters may accumulate up to a maximum of one thousand one hundred twenty (1,120) hours of unused sick leave (the equivalent of one hundred forty 8-hour days).    (E)   At retirement, any employee who qualifies for a Village retirement plan shall be entitled to "cash in" one-third (1/3) of any accumulated sick days for their current cash value, or may utilize two-thirds (2/3) of those days as service credit toward retirement. (Ord. 97-3, 1-28-1997)
   In the event of termination, resignation or any other discontinuation of employment, unused sick leave is lost without any form of compensation. (Ord. 91-2, 2-12-1991, eff. retroactive to 1-1-1991; amd. Ord. 96-1, 1-9-1996)
   (F)   In addition to the sick leave, vacation and compensatory time authorized in this chapter, the Village Board may, in its discretion, authorize an employee, other than a firefighter, with a verified, extended illness who has expended all of his or her accumulated sick leave, vacation and compensatory time to utilize up to ninety six (96) hours of the employee's sick leave for the following year. The Village Board may, in its discretion, authorize a firefighter with a verified, extended illness who has expended all of his or her accumulated sick leave, vacation and compensatory time to utilize up to one hundred forty four (144) hours of the firefighter's sick leave for the following year.    (G)   Full time employees shall be entitled to up to three (3) days of bereavement leave (one 24-hour shift in the case of firefighters) when the employee experiences a death in the immediate family. The Village may require proof of death. For purposes of this section "immediate family" shall include parents, spouse, brothers, sisters, children, stepchildren, grandparents, grandchildren, parents-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and legal guardians.
