8-1-1: DEFINITIONS:
Whenever any words or phrases used herein are not defined, but are defined in the Vehicle Code of the state and amendments thereto, those definitions shall apply.
The following words and phrases when used in this title shall for the purpose of this title have the meanings respectively ascribed to them in this chapter:
   COACH: Any motor bus or motor coach used as a common carrier of passengers.
   COUNCIL: The city council of the city of El Segundo, California.
   CURB: A physical barrier defining the lateral boundary of the roadway including returns at intersections.
   DIVISIONAL ISLAND: A raised island or an area designated by double paint stripes located in the roadway and separating opposing or conflicting streams of traffic.
   LOADING ZONE: The space adjacent to a curb reserved for the exclusive use of vehicles during the loading or unloading of passengers or materials.
   OFFICIAL TIME STANDARD: Whenever certain hours are named herein, they shall mean standard time or daylight saving time as may be in current use in the city.
   OVERSIZED VEHICLE: Any vehicle, as defined by section 670 of the California Vehicle Code, or combination of vehicles, which exceeds twenty two feet (22') in length, seven feet (7') in width, or eight feet (8') in height, exclusive of projecting lights or devices allowed by section 35109 or 35110 of the California Vehicle Code, as may be amended. The term "oversized vehicle" does not include pickup trucks or sport utility vehicles that are less than twenty five feet (25') in length and eighty two inches (82") in height.
   PARKWAY: That portion of a street right of way other than a roadway or a sidewalk.
   PASSENGER LOADING ZONE: The space adjacent to a curb reserved for the exclusive use of vehicles during the loading or unloading of passengers.
   PEDESTRIAN: Any person afoot.
   POLICE DEPARTMENT: The El Segundo police department.
   POLICE OFFICER: Every officer of the police department of the city or any officer authorized to direct or regulate traffic or to make arrests for violations of traffic regulations.
   RECREATIONAL VEHICLE: Has the same meaning as section 18010 of the Health And Safety Code.
   STOP: Complete cessation of movement.
   TRAILER: A trailer, semitrailer, camp trailer (including tent trailers), unmounted camper, or trailer coach as defined in sections 242, 243, 550, 630, 635, and 636 of the California Vehicle Code, or fifth wheel travel trailer, as defined in section 324 of the Vehicle Code. The term "trailer" includes trailers that are attached to another vehicle by means of a hitch or otherwise, and trailers that are not attached to another vehicle (i.e., "detached" trailers).
   VEHICLE CODE: The Vehicle Code of the state of California.
   YARD, FRONT: A yard extending across the full width of the lot, the depth of which is that minimum horizontal distance between the front lot line and a line parallel to the front line of the permitted structures.
   YARD, SIDE: A yard extending from the rear of the required front yard to the front of the required rear yard, the depth of which is the minimum horizontal distance between the side lot line and a line parallel thereto. (Ord. 659, 3-13-1967; amd. Ord. 1281, 10-7-1997; Ord. 1523, 2-21-2017)
