§ 156.032 WATER SOFTENER PERMITS.
   (A)   A water treatment device installer shall obtain a permit to install water treatment devices. A State of Indiana Plumbing License and registration are not required where such installation does not require the making of opening into water supply piping or into drain piping as set forth in § 156.035.
   (B)   If no connections have been provided by a plumbing contractor, the water softener company much obtain a plumbing permit. For a water softener company (“company”) to be eligible to obtain a plumbing permit, the company must do the following:
      (1)   Have at least one, but not more than two employees take and pass the city’s plumbing exam;
      (2)   Register the employee(s) and the company with the Building Department each calendar year;
      (3)   Pay a $25 registration fee for each individual and the company per calendar year;
      (4)   Provide a bond to the city in an amount deemed appropriate by the Building Commissioner.
The company can only obtain a plumbing permit for the installation of water treatment devices.
   (C)   If the registered person leaves the company, he or she is not allowed to obtain a plumbing permit as an individual, nor is the company allowed to continue to obtain any plumbing permits in the individual’s name.
   (D)   A person must answer correctly at least 75% of the questions on the city’s plumbing exam in order to pass the exam. If a person does not achieve a score of 75% or greater, the person is eligible to take the test three additional times in the same calendar year. The wait time for failing to pass the exam is three months after each failed attempt. A maximum of four failed tests if allowed in any give calendar year. After the fourth failure, the person must wait until the next calendar year to attempt to pass the test. All exam questions shall come from the current Indiana Plumbing Code Book.
