6-1-3: CHIEF OF POLICE:
   A.   Office Created; Appointment: There is hereby created the office of police chief. The chief shall be appointed by the Mayor by and with the consent of the board of trustees; provided, that if the person appointed chief was at the time of such promotion a member of the department, he shall retain his status and rank while serving as chief and shall revert to such status and rank when his term as chief has ended.
   B.   Duties:
      1.   Generally: The chief of police shall be keeper of the village jail and shall have custody of all persons incarcerated therein. He shall keep such records and make such reports concerning the activities of his department as may be required by statute or ordinance. The chief shall be responsible for the performance by the police department of all its functions, and all persons who are members of the department shall serve subject to the orders of the chief of police.
      2.   Custody Of Stolen Property: The chief of police shall be custodian of all lost, abandoned or stolen property in the village.
