Where sleeping rooms are on an upper level, a detector shall be placed at the center of the ceiling directly above the stairway. All detectors shall be located within 12 inches of the ceiling. Care shall be exercised to ensure that the installation will not interfere with the operating characteristics of the detector. When actuated, the detector shall provide an alarm.
