No person shall knowingly purchase, sell, convey by gift, receive or otherwise transfer or take possession of any item or personal property which possessed or which in its manufacture or sale commonly possesses a manufacturer's serial or identification number, if that serial or identification number or other marking has been removed, defaced, altered or concealed. A "manufacturer's serial or identification number" shall consist of any number or marking placed on an item for the purpose of facilitating the identification of the particular item or class of items.
