The requirements specified herein are intended to encourage the planting, care and preservation of trees in the public right-of-way. The policies and procedures contained herein are intended to establish the responsibilities of the town and citizens towards trees in the public right-of-way, to state a preference for specific types of trees along city streets, to increase public awareness of the contribution of street trees to the air quality, wildlife habitat, and aesthetics of the town, and to establish urban forestry practice that enhances the gathering and dissemination of information about trees, expands the number of street trees in the town, and encourages proper maintenance techniques and accommodation of street trees.
