There is hereby created a department known as the Claremont Fire Department, the object of which shall be the prevention and extinguishment of fire and the protection of life and property within the limits of the city and any other surrounding territories as specified in writing and approved by the city council, including but not restricted to a fire district or areas covered by any mutual aid agreements entered into by the city.
