(a) Smoke detectors shall be installed and maintained within all residential dwelling units.
(b) Detectors shall be located over any stairway (excepting unenclosed stairways in a garage) and shall be located so as to be audible in every sleeping room. A minimum of one smoke detector shall be provided at each floor level.
(c) Detectors shall be powered by the house electric service and shall have battery backup power. All detectors shall otherwise conform to the requirements of the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101).
(d) In dwellings existing prior to 2-2-83, detectors may be powered by battery only (see requirement history; Ord. 861 Passed 02-3-83).
