The replacement and/or construction of sidewalks, and other pedestrian ways, shall be in accordance with these requirements and the Municipal Standard Specification for Sidewalks unless otherwise approved by Council. Any sidewalk, or pedestrian way, constructed or repaired which is not in accordance with said requirements may be reconstructed by order of Council at the abutting owner's expense.
(a) Sidewalks to be dedicated to public use shall be a minimum of five (5) feet wide. The Municipal Approving Authority may require wider sidewalks where it is determined that such is necessary based on pedestrian traffic flow, areas served, and adjacent uses.
(b) Except where otherwise approved by the Approving Authority sidewalks shall be located in the public right of way so that the inner line is approximately six inches from the property line. The specific location shall vary, within the right of way, where necessary to circumvent obstacles such as trees and utility poles (at such time as said obstacle no longer exists, the sidewalk shall be reconstructed to eliminate the circumvention). On corner lots sidewalks shall be provided along both streets; each sidewalk shall extend to the curb.
(c) Wheelchair ramps shall be provided where sidewalks extend to the curb and at all other locations where pedestrian street crossings exist or are provided. Wheelchair ramps shall also be provided at the intersection of any walking trail or other pedestrian way with any curbed driveway, street, or other means of vehicular access.
(d) Where driveways cross sidewalks the driveway paving specification shall govern (see Chapter 1155 (Required Improvements for Parking Lots and Loading Areas)).
