6-3-7: SPECIAL RULES FOR NATURAL BURIAL BLOCKS:
   A.   Decedents are not to be embalmed or topically treated with sprays or compounds. The use of funeral home approved non-toxic chemicals is permitted if required.
   B.   Decedents shall be placed inside burial containers/caskets, made from materials that are non-toxic, one hundred percent (100%) biodegradable, plant-derived natural products, untreated softwoods, cardboard, seagrass, bamboo, woven wicker and hemp, lined with cotton, linen or silk. Materials used in the construction and finishing of products shall not contain plastics, acrylics or similar synthetic materials.
   C.   Optionally decedents may also be wrapped from head to toe in a simple cotton shroud, quilt, or wool blanket and be supported on a solid board for stability for lowering into the grave. A flat board, minimum of one inch (1") thick and twelve inches (12") wide by the length of the body is suitable. Plywood and particle board materials are not acceptable due to their adhesive chemical composition.
   D.   Only one interment is allowed per grave space, including cremations.
   E.   The use of vaults of any kind is prohibited in natural burial blocks.
   F.   Graves will be excavated four and one-half feet (4.5') to five feet (5.0') deep depending on the type of burial container/casket used. Family members cannot excavate or dig the graves.
   G.   Decedent shall be respectfully lowered into the grave by the funeral home director (or their designee) that is in responsible charge of the services.
   H.   Family members and friends are welcome to participate in closing the grave by shoveling some soil back into the excavation; however, due to safety concerns, arrangements must be made in advance with the cemetery sexton. All graves will be mounded and allowed to return to their natural level. Cemetery workers will adjust the ground around uneven graves throughout the year.
   I.   Flush ground level grave markers are suggested but not required. Engraved flat natural fieldstone or quarried stone, approximately 12" x 24" and four inches (4") thick, may be used as a marker. The stone may not be machine cut or polished and should appear more natural with simple engraving. Grave marker must be installed flush with the ground as directed by the cemetery sexton; absolutely no above grade markers will be allowed in natural burial blocks.
   J.   No trees, shrubs, or other plants may be planted on individual spaces or lots. No artificial flowers, vases, wreaths, glass, flags, statues, stones, shepherds hooks, or any other similar decorations will be all allowed. The placing of temporary natural cut flowers and the like is allowed so long as all items are easily biodegradable and can be mowed over during maintenance. (Ord. 2018-35)
