(A) The course to be taken must be one which is approved for upgrading the employee's knowledge in the field of employment in which he is presently working.
(B) The employee must be recommended by his supervisor to the Safety-Service Director for his approval of the course.

(C) The city will pay the tuition for the course when it is taken the first time. If the employee fails to pass the course and wishes to pursue the study the second time, the employee must pay the tuition. When he has passed the course, he will then be upgraded to the position and rate of pay which is applicable.
(D) After completing the course of study, the employee must then take the earliest announced examination for certification. Upon being certified, he will then be upgraded. If he fails to pass the examination, he then must retake it at the earliest announced time. Failure to pass on the second try is justification for discharge. When the employee pursues the course the second time and he becomes certified, then the employee will be reimbursed the cost of tuition.

(E) The scheduled times for classes vary from daytime or nighttime to Saturday. The number of classes also varies according to the subject matter being studied. The employee will be compensated at his regular rate of pay for the number of hours scheduled.
(F) When the courses are being conducted at a location other than the city, the city will pay for the miles traveled to and from school at the rate of $.20 per mile.
(G) For purposes of divisions (A), (B) , (C), and (F) hereof, auxiliary policemen and auxiliary firemen shall be considered employees of the city.

(H) Subsections (A), (B) and (C) above are applicable to all city employees whether or not the course or courses to be taken lead to or are required for a certification to a certain job or wage classification.
