§ 34.20 FIRE CHIEF; EMPLOYMENT OF FIREFIGHTERS.
   (A)   (1)   The Fire Chief shall be appointed by the Mayor with the consent of Council, and who shall remain in office until removed in accordance with R.C. §§ 733.35 through 733.39.
      (2)   No person shall receive an appointment as Fire Chief unless he or she has, not more than 60 days prior receiving appointment, passed a physical examination by a licensed physician, showing that he or she meets the physical requirements necessary to perform the duties of the position to which he or she is to be appointed as established by the Village Council. In addition the appointee shall in accordance with village employment practices have a drug test and a background check, including his or her driving record prior to appointment. The appointing authority shall, prior to making any appointment, file with the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund or the Local Volunteer Firefighter’s Dependents Fund a copy of the report or findings of the licensed physician. The professional fee for this physical examination shall be paid for by the Village Council.

      (3)   The individual shall be considered to be appointed to six-month probationary period. Upon the completion of the six months of service the appointee may be discharged or retained, or continued for an additional six-month probationary period upon the recommendation of the Mayor and the consent of Council.
      (4)   The Fire Chief shall oversee the operation of the Fire Department These duties shall include the training and direction of all firefighters and ambulance personnel, as well as the operation of the Paramedic Program. He or she shall have the oversight of the purchase and maintenance of all equipment and buildings.
      (5)   The annual salary of the Fire Chief shall be as set by Council. In addition the Fire Chief shall be eligible for the hourly wage accorded firefighters for fire and ambulance runs in accordance with the rank or job classification listed in the annual salary ordinance.
      (6)   The Village Fire Chief shall not be on duty less than eight hours per week. The Village Fire Chief upon the prior approval of the Mayor, may work up to but not exceeding an additional 16 additional hours per week for specific projects.
   (B)   (1)   The Village Council shall provide for the employment of such firefighters as it deems best and shall fix the compensation of the firefighters.
      (2)   No persons shall be appointed as a permanent full-time paid member of the Fire Department unless such person has received a certificate issued by the State Board of Education under R.C. § 2303.07 evidencing his or her satisfactory completion of a firefighter training program.
      (3)   The Village Council may provide for the services of volunteer firefighters, who shall be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Village Council and who shall continue in office until removed therefrom as provided in R.C. §§ 733.35 to 733.39 inclusive.
      (4)   No person shall be appointed compensated firefighter or volunteer firefighter unless he or she has, not more than 60 days prior to receiving such appointment, passed a physical examination, given by a licensed physician, showing that he or she meets the physical requirements necessary to perform the duties of the position to which he or she is to be appointed as established by the Village Council. The appointing authority shall, prior to making any such appointment, file with the Police and Firemen’s Disability and Pension Fund a copy of the report or findings of said licensed physician. The professional fee for such physical examination shall be paid by the Village Council.
